Definition of Implicit Personality Theory

An implicit personality theory refers to a person’s perspectives regarding the personality characteristics that appear to be shared among people (Baudson & Preckel, 2013). It explains certain patterns and biases that a person applies when forming impressions about other people. This theory forms the basis of the inferences a person makes about others. For instance, if a person behaves energetically, and people assume that energy is associated with intelligence, then they will probably conclude that the person is intelligent (Baudson & Preckel, 2013).

How a Person would Use Implicit Personality Theory to enhance their Impression Management

Impression management refers to the process by which a person controls how he or she is perceived by others (Leary, 2019). It is based on the belief that public image is relevant to the achievement of the desired impression goals. A person can use implicit personality theory to understand specific patterns and biases that others apply when forming impressions about him or her. For instance, physical appearance tends to lead people into believing that an individual has various desirable traits (Leary, 2019). As such, a person may influence people to infer that he or she has many desirable characteristics by displaying their gloominess. In job interviews, interviewers tend to judge candidates in terms of how they have dressed up and put their hair. For example, a person who always observes personal cleanliness or hygiene is perceived as having other desirable traits (Leary, 2019). In other words, a person can maintain a few positive traits in order to make other people believe that they have other positive characteristics.

Case Example of a Politician who used Impression Management to Create a Certain Image

Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of Canada since 2015 and has maintained his political brand through impression management. Trudeau has used Instagram to portray a public image that appeals to his subjects. According to Lalancette & Raynauld (2019), Trudeau’s image management techniques of using Instagram and other social media networks has helped him to create the impression to his subjects that he possesses qualities such as sincerity, trustworthiness, intelligence, and friendliness. Trudeau has used Instagram to focus on different elements of governance and leadership, including how he portrays his governing style visually. He also uses social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter to show how he utilizes his personal life to champion the values and ideas of the Liberal Party of Canada.

The Implications of Impression Management or Implicit Personality Theory for Social Change

Implicit personality theory has many implications for social judgment.  Implicit personality theory can be used by social change agents to influence people. From the perspective of this theory, people tend to conclude that if a person displays a few positive traits, then he or she has many others. For this reason, it is possible for individuals who possess charismatic skills to influence people in society to believe that they can bring social change. For instance, former United States President Barack Obama used his charisma to make people think they could achieve greatness through unity. President Obama used his political slogan “Yes, We Can” to advocate for social justice and prosperity of all American citizens regardless of their diverse backgrounds (Baudson & Preckel, 2013).

Individuals who believe in themselves attract support from other people and bring social change (Baudson & Preckel, 2013). Impression management is about displaying some positivity in life to be able to overcome barriers and achieve desired goals. Even in organizations, managers tend to promote employees who demonstrate good characters by assuming that they have other positive traits to handle new challenges. It is, therefore, vital for individuals to always display positive characteristics to be able to influence social change.

How I have used Impression Management to enhance My Professional Image

I display professional etiquettes such as politeness, respect, and friendliness when interacting with my clients, employees, and managers. In business, honesty and trust are two critical values that people look for. As such, I maintain business etiquette to help me to build solid relationships with employees, customers, suppliers, management, etc.  This strategy enables me to control how other people perceive me. For instance, when I treat customers with respect, politeness, and friendliness, they tend to remain loyal to my company.

Furthermore, I speak with confidence to customers to show that I am knowledgeable about the services that I am offering to them. For instance, when dealing with an angry customer, I always approach the customer appropriately and listen attentively to their concerns. I speak calmly and respectively to customers. I understand that when employees are confident in what they do, they can enhance the company’s marketability. Customers feel more secure when dealing with employees who are confident in what they do or say.  My self-belief and self-confidence have enabled me to experience growth in my career because I seek new challenges and get support from my colleagues.
