Introduction

All the leading health indicators are engulfed in Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives. However, Healthy People 2020 seeks to promote health by addressing disability, preventing diseases, and reducing mortalities. The Department of Health and Human Services, through Healthy People 2020, is also determined to initiate healthy behaviors and promote universal health by eliminating inequalities and disparities. The paper aims to present how Healthy People 2020 relates to school health. It furthers discusses three initiatives that can be implemented in the school health program.

Healthy People 2020 is connected to school health in adolescent health, early and middle childhood (HealthyPeople.gov, n.d.). Since most adolescents and young adults are still in school, Healthy People 2020 aims to improve health amongst this population. Healthy People 2020 aims to address sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancies, mental disorders that affect students’ education and well-being (HealthyPeople.gov, n.d.). Along with Healthy People 2020, healthy students are motivated to learn and perform well. Early and Middle Childhood is considered in Healthy People 2020 .during this developmental period, young students are susceptible to obesity, developmental disorders, asthma, and child maltreatment (HealthyPeople.gov, n.d.).Healthy People 2020 enhances early and middle childhood development by increasing access to quality care, creating a conducive environment for learning in schools and improve students’ cognitive abilities.

The first initiative to include in the school health program is implementing a health education program (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). The second initiative is teaching students how to maintain high hygiene levels to prevent contagious diseases (Mbakaya, Lee, & Lee, 2017). The last approach is implementing, monitoring healthy eating, and inspiring students to do physical exercises regularly (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). These initiatives will enable Healthy People 2020 to achieve its objectives.

In culmination, Healthy People 2020 is related to school health. The initiative is related to school in matters of adolescent health, early and middle childhood. These healthy indicators will enable Healthy People 2020 to achieve its objectives. Still, a healthy education system, intensifying hygiene campaigns, and promoting healthy eating and physical exercise would make the school heath program more robust.
