Course Description
This course explores the role of the nurse in helping individuals to maximize health and
wellness during the natural and healthy process of aging. The student will learn normal
physiologic, psychological, and social changes as well as common health alterations
associated with aging. Specific health conditions discussed include: altered sensory
input, menopause, osteoporosis, malnutrition, depression, Alzheimer’s and dementia,
COPD, and CHF. End of life issues are also discussed. Actual and simulated clinical
experiences provide students with opportunities to practice the delivery of nursing care
to selected client situations.

Total Contact Hours: 80 (30 for Lecture, 20 for Laboratory, 9 for Simulation; 21 for

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Provide safe patient care with a focus on continuous quality improvement.

    therapies in the provision of care for individuals and families.

  4. Demonstrate competence in the use of the nursing process to apply critical thinking
    and problem solving skills in caring for the needs of the patient and families,
    including health promotion and maintenance, illness care, end-of-life care,
    restoration, and rehabilitation.
  5. Communicate effectively using written, verbal, non-verbal and technological
    methods to provide patient centered nursing care in collaboration with the health
    care team.
  6. Promote health and wellness using principles of teaching-learning and leadership
    while working collaboratively with the client, family, and interdisciplinary health care
    team to achieve expected health outcomes.
  7. Use knowledge from nursing science in collaboration with other health care
    providers to provide nursing care for individuals of various cultures and
    developmental stages in diverse health care environments.

    Course Objectives
    In this course, students will:
  9. Discuss physical, psychological, and social stressors commonly encountered by the
    older adult.(SLO-4)
  10. Discuss communication, critical thinking, psychomotor, and teaching skills in order to
    provide the adult client with culturally competent care. (SLO-3, 5, 6)
  11. Use the steps of the nursing process to contribute to the provision of safe, timely,
    efficient, effective, and client centered care. (SLO-1, 2,3)
  12. Utilize assessment skills to contribute to the plan of care to meet the holistic health
    care needs of the older adult. (SLO-1, 2, 4)
  13. Demonstrate competency within the state scope of practice related to clinical
    decision making, safety and infection control, provision of basic nursing care for
    individuals.(SLO-2, 3, 5)
  14. Identify individual responsibility and accountability for own nursing practice, life-long
    learning, and ongoing professional development.(SLO-6, 7)
  15. Describe behaviors consistent with moral, ethical, and legal standards and principles
    to the client care setting.(SLO-1, 8)

    A student must achieve a satisfactory evaluation in all objectives to pass the lab
    component of this course. A score of unsatisfactory (U) in any objective at the final
    evaluation will result in failure of the lab component of this course.
    You must achieve a score of 900 on the HESI exam. Students are permitted one (1)
    attempt on the Mental Health specialty exam.
